Brittany's Journal 2003

I was invited by Chris Michaels from Clear Channel KTEX Radio located in Weslaco, Texas to perform in an acoustic show for the STARS charity event at the Graham Central Station in McAllen, Texas. I was the opening act for recording artist Billy Dean and special guests Kevin Denny and Kelly Kenning. Everyone did such an awesome job.
STARS stands
for South Texas Academic Rising Scholars program. It is scholarships for local
underprivileged students. The program started out as the Hispanic Scholarship
Fund. Then it
changed to the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The folks that were running
the program down here locally decided they did not want to do it nationally.
They wanted to keep the money here in the Valley. They developed the STARS
program. It is run through their local Budweiser distributor and other
distributors and they handle the fund raising and the distribution of the
scholarships to local students. KTEX Radio is part of the group of businesses
that help support the STARS program. They do a lot of free advertising for the
concert.
Coy and Dana Ray with Labeless Records and Marita O’Donnell, my Nashville promoter, all flew out to support the benefit and me. Rich Herring, my guitarist, also flew out from Nashville to accompany me in the show. I want to thank all of you for your support. And Rich, you are so awesome. I look forward to working with you a lot. Thank you so much for playing your guitar for me.
I had such a great time and met the most wonderful people there. Thanks to all the folks in McAllen and the surrounding cities for coming out to the show and supporting the STARS program.
I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Michaels at the Graham Central Station in McAllen, Texas where his radio station booth for KTEX Clear Channel located in Weslaco, Texas was broadcasting for that evenings charity event for STARS, the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars program. I got to do a live on the air interview that went awesome. Chris, thank you so much for inviting me out. I had a Blast!! You totally made me feel famous when you had me sign your prize guitar with so many of the major artist autographs on it, like Reba! Wow, it doesn’t get much better than this. You’re a great guy and I’ll be looking forward to the next time I see you.
My grandmother, Peggy Northern, invited me to sing at the Christmas Party for the Oklahoma City County Health Department, where she works. The last time I had the opportunity to sing at this event was when I was twelve years old. Once again, I had a great time. Thanks for all the food and fun. And Santa, thanks for being such a great sport and dancing with me during one of my songs. I really had a great time. Unfortunately, my mom’s camera decided not to work so I could not have pictures to show. I want to give a special thanks to everyone at the OCCHD that has supported me through all these years. Oh yeah, I love you Mema!!
